Eight reasons why Guatemala is one of the most beautiful places on the planet — March 2019

With lush rainforests, serene lakes and stunning coastlines, few places can rival Guatemala for sheer beauty

The Central American country of Guatemala offers an incredible wealth of beauty, from majestic volcanoes and cloud-covered rainforests to cultural treasures such as its Mayan ruins.

What’s more, Guatemala enjoys a mild climate and nearly perfect weather year-round. This “constant spring” is one reason why it is one of the 19 mega-diversity countries that are home to more than 70 per cent of all known species in the world. Here are eight reasons why you should experience the beauty of Guatemala for yourself.

Lush rainforests

Tropical forests are the “lungs” of Guatemala, with unique vegetation that is protected in the Maya Biosphere Reserve and Sierra de las Minas, the most extensive jungle in Central America. The nature is largely untouched, making for amazing hiking, exploring and viewing native wildlife. Adventure seekers will enjoy the many mountain biking and horseback riding trails through the forests, and kayaking their rivers. Or get a real adrenaline rush from zip lining through the jungle foliage.

Magnificent volcanoes

Guatemala is home to 37 volcanoes, including one of the most active ones in Central America, Pacaya. Besides their imposing beauty, some hold lakes inside their craters, such as Lake Chicabal and Ipala; while others are home to thermal springs that create natural spas to relax in. Try Almolonga, Fuentes Georginas or Aguas Amargas for delightful healing retreats after an active day climbing trail routes that are marked on many of these peaks.
