International Women’s Day Awards: Austin Woman Magazine — April 2016.
Ten Thousand Villages Austin, the nonprofit retailer specializing in handmade, fair-trade products from developing countries, celebrated International Women’s Day by recognizing Central Texas women who are making a difference in the community. The eighth annual International Women’s Day Awards, held April 8, honored local women in four categories: humanitarian, environmental, animal welfare and emerging changemaker (for women 23 years and younger).
Nominations for the awards were solicited from the community—anyone can nominate a woman each year—and nominees are evaluated by a judges’ panel of notable women in the community, including past winners. This year’s judges were Austin City Council Member Leslie Pool, legendary singer-songwriter Sara Hickman and animal-welfare activist Suzy Swingle. The emcee was Joy Diaz of KUT radio’s Texas Standard.
